Business Cards & Resumes
Sam showed this clip to me earlier, and I appreciate it so much more now that we've started discussing resume paper and business cards. Now that a few of the students have started purchasing their paper, I can honestly say that this is almost EXACTLY how we act in CMD...

Midterms (I'll mock it up, show you what I got!)
Part of being a CommDesigner is learning how to appreciate (i.e. geek out about) good typography. I will be overworked and underfed this week, so please enjoy this awesome parody in my absence :-)

Snow Day!

(Photo complements of Allie)
Yesterday, Syracuse experienced it's first Snow Day in four years! I'll admit, it was pretty exciting to be at the Warehouse and hear that classes after 1:30pm were canceled for the day. I ended up finishing up my work anyway, and then went with Sam to Kitty Hoyne's in Armory Square for a great lunch. At home, Allie and I both scheduled our photography sessions for portfolio and researched different portfolio books. We're going today to look at a local art store that carries one of the brands we like.
Getting my hair cut tomorrow and having a dishwasher installed today! Good times.

Totally Fabulous Drag Show
Wow. I cannot believe that I've been at Syracuse for four years and have never seen the drag show! It was AMAZING! The auditorium was sold out, the crowd was pumped up, and the acts themselves were fantastic. I really wish I had been aware of this show before; I would have been at every one! To anyone who ends up coming to Syracuse, be sure to check it out in the Spring!

Olympic-sized Potluck!
Tonight is the opening ceremony for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, and to celebrate, my house is hosting a potluck dinner! The theme is multicultural, so everyone is bringing a dish from a different country! I'm representing Greece (I think?) with a salami, cheese, & olive board (complements of Sam's Club). Allie is making Horchata, a delicious Mexican rice drink, and everything else will be a surprise :-)
I'm also going to a wine & cheese party (for the seniors over 21 ;-)) this weekend at a friend's house, and we're planning on buying tickets to the drag show, in which our friend Tim is performing. Looks to be an exciting week!
Now to think about how homework is going to fit in....

Passing the Torch
This past Wednesday, Sam (my good friend & partner in crime) and I turned over the reins of SU's AIGA club to a new executive board. It was time. However, feeling the withdrawal, Sam suggested that we start our own design blog about what it's like to transition from a student to professional designer. The goal is to update once a day (sadly I've been a little lax in this), and we have some interesting topics lined up.

Halloweekend!
Halloween was on a Saturday this year, so the college festivities were many and varied this weekend!
On Friday, AIGA and IDSA hosted the MONSTER MASH on the fourth floor of the Warehouse (CoLab). At first, I was a bit nervous about the number of people who were going to turn out because we didn't sell many tickets beforehand, but we ended up making over $100 in ticket sales at the door! A group of our professors came as well and were special guest judges for the costume contest :-) My friend Casey's giant squid costume won in the "most unique" category. We also had a mummy wrapping contest and a powdered donut eating contest; it was a nice throwback to old school Halloween games.
On Saturday, I went with a bunch of Illustration kids to Casey's house in Marcellus (about 15 minutes away). Her neighborhood is REALLY into Halloween, and her mom had decorated the entire outside of their house in spiders and cobwebs. We also carved pumpkins and drank hot apple cider (so good!). Kids started trick-or-treating around 4:00pm, and by the time we left at 8:30pm over 1000 kids had passed through the neighborhood! We also watched Hocus Pocus to round out the night, and then it was back to campus for the rest of the night!

Weekend Weather Report
You know you're in Syracuse when it's expected to snow mid-October. Saturday has a 30% chance of snow, but that is not going to stop me from going apple/pumpkin picking! I'm also going to Casey's choir concert in the afternoon and then hopefully making some apple cider/pie later that night!

Weekend Review
Friday I... worked in the morning, went to my kickboxing class in the afternoon, and then checked out my friend Travis' "rave" later that night. (Truth be told, it wasn't that great)
Saturday I... took the roomies grocery shopping at Sam's Club and Price Chopper. We later ate delicious grilled cheese sandwiches (our friend Sam makes them with bacon, apple slices, and Gruyère cheese, YUM!) at Carl's house, and rounded out the night be stopping by Tracy's birthday party for a bit.
Sunday I... grabbed some coffee at Recess in the late afternoon and then helped (and by helped, I really mean watched) Margaret make vegetarian chili for Derek's Chili Cook-Off. Margaret ended up winning second place at the Cook-off, and I bonded with some people by killing them in Mortal Combat on the PS3 :-D. Casey and I later met up with Travis & co. for game night at his girlfriend's house.
Monday I... did a lot of nothing. I relaxed on the Quad for a bit and tried out my new bubble recipe. I can happily report that I now know how to make 15-foot bubbles :-) I also stretched my legs a bit and played catch with Margaret & Casey. We later watched the Harry Potter Musical online and Empire of the Sun (Christian Bale's first movie).
All in all, my weekend mission of relaxing and having fun was a success.
Let the new year of CommDesign commence!
